Admission to Department
The
Graduate Coordinator shall be responsible for Classified Admissions. The
Administrative Support Coordinator will notify students when their standings
have been determined. Classified Admission to the department occurs when
the following conditions are met:
-
The student completes the Department's admission application.
-
A score of 4.5 on the GRE writing assessment or the completion of RWS 503W or comparable technical writing course with a grade of B+ or higher.
-
Grades of B+ or higher are achieved in both EDTEC 540 and EDTEC 541.
-
Scores of 950 or higher are achieved in the combined GRE Verbal and Quantitative tests.
-
Three letters of recommendation are provided from individuals other than EDTEC faculty that strongly suggest a suitable candidate.
-
Acceptance is granted by the university.
Students may not enroll in any EDTEC 600 level or higher course until they receive Classified Admission and are admitted to our MA program. Students may not enroll in EDTEC 544 until they have fulfilled the writing competency expectation.
If a student applies for admission, but does not meet all requirements, the Graduate Coordinator may admit the student to Conditional Admission standing. The conditions and the time by which those conditions must be met, shall be listed on the Conditional Admission form.
A student who meets five of the six requirements for Classified Admission will have their files reviewed by the faculty at the next department meeting. After discussion, the faculty will decide whether special circumstances allow for either Classified Admission, Conditional Admission with additional conditions, or denied of admission.
Course Substitution
An external
graduate course may be substituted for an EDTEC course if a student has
passed that course at an accredited institution with a grade of "B" or
better within a seven-year time limit, and has not used the course in fulfillment
of another degree. The Graduate Coordinator will determine the appropriateness
of the course being substituted. When in doubt about the appropriateness
of the course, the Graduate Coordinator shall consult with department faculty
who teach or have taught the course. An examination covering the content
of the course may be required to ensure relevant knowledge and skills.
The examination will be based on an agreed-upon text or another means of
assessment of competence to facilitate shared terminology and opportunity
for review. If a course is to be substituted, the Graduate Coordinator
or designee shall provide an electronic or paper copy of the substitution
to the Department's Administrative Support Coordinator, who is to send
a copy to the student. A copy shall be placed in the student's file.
Course Waiver
A course may be waived for a student who possesses job experience parallel
to the knowledge and skills gained by students taking the course. An examination
covering the content of the course may be required to ensure knowledge and
skills have been gained. The examination will be based on an agreed-upon text
to facilitate common terminology and give students a common basis for review.
This course will then be replaced in the student's graduate program with a
course appropriate to the student's concentration of study. If a course is
to be waived, the Graduate Coordinator or designee shall provide an electronic
or paper copy of the waiver to the Department's Administrative Support Coordinator,
who is to send a copy to the student. A copy shall be placed in student's file.
This waiver only applies to EDTEC 540 and 541.
